This week I finally got around to publishing my 2018 Reflections. It was fun looking back on my 2017 Reflections to see how much has changed.
If you haven’t already, I strongly recommend just taking an hour or a few and thinking back on your favorite things that happened in 2018 and what you might want to double down on in 2019.
Plus, it’s just fun to remember how much happens in a year.
Articles to read.
The Uncharity of College: The Big Business Nobody Understands
“In 2018, MIT’s operating budget was ~$3.5B dollars, and its Endowment was $16.4 billion.” Long read, but worth it.
How Races and Religions Match in Online Dating
Hilarious, spicy, recently resurfaced OkCupid article. My favorite part is how clear that data shows that zodiac signs have NO impact on compatibility.
The 70 Percent Solution: What Are Taxes For?
I do my best to avoid the news, but even I heard about AOC proposing a 70% marginal tax rate. I love this article because it presents rational articles from both sides, and features Tyler Cowen - one of my favorite writers/economists.
The funny part of this whole thing is that such a policy would probably never directly affect anyone reading this newsletter (I don’t think any of you make > 10 mill 🤔).
Regardless of how you feel about the policy, this feels like the democrat version of tactics Trump used to become president.
Say something outrageous that you will probably never be able to implement
get a ton of press because of it
profit.
Podcasts.
Episode 178: The Novel and The Beautiful
I’ve been really digging The Mission Daily podcast recently. This episode is no exception and inspired me to do a bit of exploring this past weekend 😃.
Reading.
I’ve been scattered across a few books reading lately: Lapham’s Quarterly, The Life You Can Save, I Hope They Serve beer in Hell, and The Wizard in the Prophet.
Should probably consolidate the list a bit, but I’m enjoying the variety for now 🤷♂️.
Personal
This coming weekend I’m headed up to Tahoe for some skiing over MLK weekend. They’re projected for 32-48 inches of snow between now and Friday. I couldn’t be more stoked.
I’ll be coming back Monday night which might make it a bit tough to get the newsletter out but I believe 🙏.
That’s it! I hope you have a novel and beautiful week 😉
